Kannapolis man charged with murder after shooting leaves one dead

KANNAPOLIS — A Kannapolis man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with a shooting that left one person dead Monday.

The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. Monday, when officers with the Kannapolis Police Department responded to a home in the 1900 block of Lane Street in reference to shots fired, according to a city release .

When officers arrived on scene, they reportedly found Ebony Gill, 43, suffering from a gunshot wound. The release said Gill died at the scene from his injuries.

According to the release, the shooting occurred during an altercation between several people at the home.

Jawaren Brion Smith, 18, was arrested with the help of area residents after attempting to flee the scene, according to the release. He was charged with first-degree murder and placed in the Cabarrus County Detention Center without bail, according to online jail records.
