Police: Minor injured after shooting near Avondale Elementary School

MINICAMP. THIS IS ONE NEWS 5 LEADING THE WAY, GETTING DRIVERS WHO ARE GOING TOO SPEED TO BRAKE TONIGHT. SHOCKING NEW FIGURES ON HOW FREQUENCY PEOPLE ARE CROSSING SCHOOL ZONES AT HIGH SPEED. Thanks for joining us at five. MY NAME IS ASHLEY KIRKLEN AND CHRIS JACOBS, WLWT NEWS FIVE'S TODD – IS LIVE WITH TRAFFIC EXPERTS PLANNING TO MAKE CITY STREETS SAFER. TODD YEAH, THEY TRY. CHRIS AND ASHLEY. HELLO TO YOU. You know, given how distracted drivers can be, cars are increasingly speeding through pedestrian crossings and also speeding past speed limit signs. And that's a recipe for disaster in school zones like this, people, they really don't care. They fly on the street like on a race track. I don't understand why people try to rush through here during the school zone. Anyway, you know what? I SAY? BUT IF YOU CROSS THE STREET, THE PERSON IN THE ROOM PASSAGE HAS THE PRIORITY OF PASSAGE. THE STATE IS NOT SURPRISING. TODAY CINCINNATI TRANSPORTATION DIRECTOR JOHN BREZINA SHARED STUNNING NEW FIGURES SHOWING HOW MANY CARS WENT TOO FAST IN FOUR SCHOOL ZONES DURING A WEEK LAST MONTH. EVERY DRIVER WHO PASSED GAMBLE MONTESSORI WAS GOING ABOVE THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT OF 20 mph. NEARLY NINE OUT OF TEN CARS WERE GOING MORE THAN 30 mph. EXCESSIVE SPEEDS WAS ALSO THE NORM IN SCHOOL ZONES NEXT TO WITHROW, WOODWARD AND SCHROEDER HIGH SCHOOLS. WE FOUND THAT APPROXIMATELY 90% OF VEHICLES VIOLATE THE 20 MPH SPEED ZONE LIMIT. Bringing that percentage closer to zero is something Brezina is trying to do. HE WAS AT CITY HALL TO INFORM MEMBERS OF THE CINCINNATI PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE ABOUT EFFORTS TO MAKE DRIVERS BE MORE AWARE OF SAFETY ISSUES. WE HAVE INSTALLED SPEED CUSHIONS ALL OVER THE CITY. THEY ARE DESIGNED TO RESPECT THE SPEED LIMIT. There is a speed limit sign there, so you don't need to crawl. Crawl on it. YOU CAN DO THE SPEED LIMIT. AND OUR GOAL IS REALLY TO REDUCE THE VEHICLE SPEED TO THE SPEED LIMIT. There are therefore fewer deaths with pedestrians. NOW MORE THAN 60 PEDESTRIAN SAFETY PROJECTS WILL BE INSTALLED BY THE END OF THIS YEAR. AND 27 OF CINCINNATI'S 52 NEIGHBORHOODS, THESE AND OTHER PROJECTS THAT ARE UNDERWAY, ARE THE RESULT OF A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH BETWEEN URBAN PLANNERS AND NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCILS, REPORTING LIVE TONIGHT. TODD – WLWT NEWS FIVE. Very good, TODD, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Well, a violent weekend in Cincinnati, multiple shootings in multiple neighborhoods. AMONG THE VICTIMS, TEENS AS AGE 15 AND UP. NOW, WITH THE START OF SUMMER, OFTEN COMES AN INCREASE IN DRAWINGS. THAT'S RIGHT. AND NOW LAW ENFORCEMENT AND LOCAL LEADERS ARE WORKING TO CHANGE THAT. WLWT NEWS FIVE'S DAISY KERSHAW IS LIVE WITH A LOOK AT CITY PLANS. DAISY. Well, Ashley, when it comes to reducing violence, city leaders are focusing their attention on children this summer. INCREASING SHOOTINGS, ESPECIALLY AMONG CHILDREN ACROSS THE UNITED STATES AND HERE AT HOME, SHOOTINGS often peak in the summer, making those months some of the deadliest months of the year for gun violence . THIS WEEKEND ONLY, A BOND HILL SHOOTING SENT A 17-YEAR-OLD AND A 24-YEAR-OLD TO OTR HOSPITAL, A WOMAN SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES WHILE IN A BAR, AND IN EVANSTON A SHOOTING THREE PEOPLE INJURED, EVEN A WEAPON. Death is one death too many, and I think everyone on the city council, everyone in law enforcement, our entire community is united in making sure that the ultimate number that we want to reach is zero. CINCINNATI COUNCIL MEMBER ANNA SHELBY IS AMONG THOSE WORKING TO REDUCE VIOLENCE, SAYING IT'S A COMMUNITY EFFORT. We are very strategic about where we invest our resources, time and energy to combat gun violence. WE HAVE SEEN PROGRESS. A FEW WEEKS AGO, THE POLICE CHIEF PRESENTED THIS YEAR BY YEAR. THIS YEAR 2024 COMPARED TO 2023, WE HAVE SEEN A REDUCTION IN DRAWINGS AMONG CHILDREN. CITY LEADERS KNOW THERE IS STILL WORK TO BE DONE, STARTING WITH SAFER SUMMERS. THE CITY IS PARTNERING WITH THE CINCINNATI POLICE FOR SPECIAL PROGRAMMING TO GIVE KIDS A SPACE TO HAVE FUN. THEY HAVE GOT SPECIAL EVENINGS AT THE DIFFERENT POOLS FOR THE CRC, THEY HAVE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ONGOING AT ALL THE LEISURE CENTERS. We have officers there. We have some involved programming where we can be engaged this summer. THE CITY IS ALSO PARTNERING WITH CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL TO OFFER A VIOLENCE INTERVENTION PROGRAM, AND THEY ARE FINDING WAYS TO OFFER SUPPORT TO VICTIMS OF GUN VIOLENCE, OFFERING HELP WITH THINGS LIKE HOUSING, MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS AND ALSO FOOD INSECURITY. REPORTING LIVE DAISY KERSHAW, WLWT NEWS FIVE. Daisy, thank you very much. WELL, THE LAST WEEK OF THE BENGALS OFF-SEASON PROGRAM COMES WITH THE RETURN OF JAMAAR CHASE SPORTS ANCHOR CHARLIE CLIFFORD JOINS US NOW WITH AN UPDATE ON THE STAR RECEIVER. So I hope that a few questions have been answered for us. YEAH, THE WHOLE TEAM. HAPPY TO SEE THIS TODAY. JAMAAR CHASE CHOSE NOT TO SPEAK TO JOURNALISTS FOLLOWING THE PRACTICE. CHASE IS ELIGIBLE FOR FIRST CONTRACT EXTENSION THIS SUMMER. THE BENGALS CAN WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT OFF-SEASON TO HAVE THIS DONE TO ALL. THIS WILL FOLLOW THE THREE TIMES PRO BOWL WIDEOUT. THIS IS JUST PART OF THE DEAL BEING BACK ON THE FIELD FOR THE FIRST MANDATORY GAME OF THE OFF-SEASON. THIS IS IMPORTANT FOR BOTH SIDES. In recent months, he has trained alone in Dallas and Miami. TODAY HE OUT RACE ROUTES WITH JOE BURROW, STARTING THE SEVEN OF SEVEN PASS WORK. BUT STILL, HE'S HERE. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING. Um, Burrow adds, they've been texting throughout the spring, talking about ideas for the offense this season. YOU DEFINITELY FEEL HIS PRESENCE. It was nice to see him there again. You know, he's a guy who always brings energy, always, always. Talking to the guys, whether it's to perform the current piece or if it's just to provide fun and energy. You know, he's a happy go lucky guy that you enjoy being there with. So it’s always good that he comes back. You know, I feel good knowing where our chemistry is. T HIGGINS STILL NOT IN? NO SURPRISE THERE. The Bengals are off for more than a month after Thursday's practice and Burrow is picking up a new hobby to help fill the time. This story is always early at six o'clock. Maybe someone like Billy Joel could help us bury ourselves. STILL HEAD AT 5:00 P.M. US OPEN IN PINEHURST THIS WEEK. A REMINDER THAT OLD BOYS RULE. THE Cincinnati native, who fought his way onto the field, will
