Juvenile arrested in murder of 42-year-old man: Sansom Park police

SANSOM PARK – Juvenile arrested in murder of 42-year-old man who was fatally shot after confronting two young men who, according to his family, were threatening them.

Richard Applegate's family says he was killed around 6:15 a.m. June 21 at his home near Skyline Drive.

Her family claims the confrontation began when the two men falsely accused Applegate's mother of calling the police on them earlier that morning.

One of the suspects pulled a gun from his backpack and shot Applegate as he tried to protect his family. The suspects then fled on foot.

Sansom Park police are not releasing any additional information about the suspect because he is a juvenile, but said he was arrested within 30 minutes of the warrant being issued.

“There are no outstanding suspects in this case, and this is believed to be an isolated incident,” said a news release from Sansom Park Police.
