Justin Timberlake's lawyer issues statement after star's alleged DWI arrest in Sag Harbor – NBC New York

An attorney for Justin Timberlake has released a statement regarding the pop star's arrest on Long Island for alleged drunken driving after he repeatedly refused to take a chemical test during a police traffic stop.

“I look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake on these allegations,” attorney Edward Burke Jr. said.

An officer observed the gray BMW with Florida license plates that Timberlake was driving as it failed to stay on the right side of the road shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday in Sag Harbor, according to the criminal complaint . He also allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign on Madison Street at Jermain Avenue before having trouble staying on his side of the road.

After seeing it swerve twice, police stopped the vehicle.

The police officer who arrested him said the so-called “Prince of Pop” appeared drunk, with bloodshot, glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The complaint says Timberlake was unsteady and had slowed speech; he also reportedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests. They said he also couldn't concentrate on his conversation with police while he searched for her recording.

“I drank a martini and followed my friends home,” Timberlake allegedly told police.

Officers took him to the Sag Village Police Department for processing, where the complaint says he refused three times, within about 40 minutes, to take a chemical test of his blood alcohol level.

“No, I don’t do a chemical test,” Timberlake said according to the complaint. The singer reiterated twice: “I refuse”.

He was then taken to East Hampton Town Police Headquarters and held overnight before his arraignment Tuesday morning. Timberlake was released on his own recognizance after that hearing. Timberlake pleaded not guilty in court and was discharged July 26, officials said.

On Wednesday, Timberlake's attorney released a statement regarding the arrest.

“I will have a lot to say when the time comes, but I am currently awaiting complete information from the prosecutor's office,” Burke Jr. said.

The singer himself has not commented on the incident. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office had no further comment.

Police also had the encounter on body and in-car cameras, but the footage has not been released.

Before his arrest, Timberlake was leaving the American Hotel on Main Street, a popular spot in Sag Harbor. Famous singer Billy Joel lives in the city and was spotted at the hotel and restaurant Tuesday by an NBC News crew.

“I don't really know him, so I don't have any comment,” Joel said when asked about Timberlake's encounter with police.

“Do not judge, lest you be judged,” Joel added.

The arrest comes as Timberlake is on his first world tour in nearly six years. The pop icon is set to perform at New York's Madison Square Garden next week, June 25-26.

Representatives for Madison Square Garden Entertainment referred questions to Timberlake's representatives.

Sag Harbor is a coastal village in the Hamptons, approximately 100 miles from New York City. In summer, it is a popular place for wealthy visitors.
