June 16 shooting in Oakland, California leaves several injured

Several people were injured following a shooting at a Juneteenth celebration in Oakland, California, on Wednesday evening, police said.

Around 8:45 p.m., after a fight broke out, the shooting occurred, according to Oakland police.

“We were all partying, there were shows, a few fights. Next thing we know, we all thought we heard fireworks, so we ran in the direction,” witness Tamia Robinson told the local newspaper ABC7 News.

The celebrations, which brought together around 5,000 people, took place “calmly until around 8:15 p.m., when an illegal spectacle involving vehicles and motorcycles took place…” specifies a police press release.

“These were not authorized gatherings,” adds the text.

A fight ensued, and as the crowd began to gather, several shots were fired, according to the release.

Medical personnel transported several victims to hospitals, but others were transported in private vehicles. The exact number of victims is still under investigation, police said.

Police officers injured while trying to control crowd, investigation underway

Several police officers were slightly injured while trying to guide the crowd to safety. They were hit and pushed, the statement said.

An investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call the OPD Criminal Assault Unit and email [email protected] any photos or videos that may help investigation.
