June 16 shooting in Oakland: at least 4 shots near Lake Merritt, police say

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) — At least four people were shot Wednesday night during a Juneteenth celebration in Lake Merritt in Oakland, police said.

According to authorities, around 9 p.m., Oakland police and firefighters responded to Grand and Euclid avenues for a report of several shootings where a large crowd was gathered.

ABC7 News spoke with a witness who was at the scene.

“We were all partying, there were shows, a few fights. Next thing we know, we all thought we heard fireworks, so we ran in the direction,” said witness Tamia Robinson. “The next thing you hear is another 'boom, boom, boom, boom, boom' from across the lake. We're walking down here, and my sister runs across the street, where she since one of her friends was lying outside.

Police said four shooting victims were transported to a hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

A number of other injuries were also reported. Authorities say the incident could be a possible “mass casualty” event.

The public is asked to avoid the area of ​​I-580 on Grand Avenue.
