July 4: Extreme heat and fireworks pose high fire risk in East Bay this week

DUBLIN, Calif. (KGO) — The July 4th holiday and a significant, sustained heat wave pose a more than extreme fire risk in the East Bay this week.

“What we've done within the fire department is create something that can go into a lot more places and get the fire lines out into rural areas and four-wheel drive roads and provide water, personnel and firefighting capabilities,” said Capt. Eric Truax of the Alameda County Fire Department.

In addition to the usual array of ready-to-respond apparatus, the Alameda County Fire Department is increasing its staffing and deploying new plans, including a newly trained crew and on-call volunteers.

“One of the best assets we have to have a fighting chance is a dozer that can remove fuel and set up a perimeter,” said Capt. Truax. “In Alameda County, we have three of them. We’re bringing in two of them and we’re beefing up the personnel for this Red Flag event and the Fourth of July.”

There are concerns about illegal fireworks.

“We have been conducting operations to thwart the influx of these illicit fireworks,” said Capt. Sean McMillan of the Alameda Sheriff’s Department.

In Newark, Union City and Dublin, it's the safe and healthy fireworks that are causing concern.

Alameda County Fire Chief Randall West responded to a question about whether so-called “safe and sane” fireworks could be borderline insane this week, given the July 4 weather. “You’re absolutely right, it may not be a good combination,” Chief West said.

It is everyone's responsibility to use fireworks responsibly when permitted.

“Parents, we want you to know with your children that if they use fireworks and it causes property damage or injury to human beings, you will be held responsible,” Chief West said.

Sergeant Roberto Morales of the Alameda Sheriff's Department said, “We are increasing the number of patrols and we will also have dedicated units specifically designed for fireworks.”

To be a good witness to illegal fireworks, he suggested staying at a safe distance, determining a precise location, and then calling the county's non-emergency line.
