July 2024 Internationals – Pumas XV missing

Argentina's 34-man roster for the July Internationals includes recalled and uncapped players. Los Pumas will face France in two international home matches before traveling across the country. Rio de la Plata to face Uruguay.

The July Internationals are the first opportunity for players to represent Argentina since the World Cup. The international window thus marks the start of a new era. This comes as Felipe Contepomi replaced Michael Cheika as the new head coach.

Contepomi's roster sees players juggling. Some people lack time to rest. This naturally means that others have opportunities. The exact selection criteria will become clearer over time; the Rugby Championship list will reveal more about Contepomi's agenda.

So who is missing from the July list? The answer is many regular players. They include the Pumas with two points caps in history as well as the regular scorer. Among them, some have not yet finished their season for their club. They include players in their twilight as well as their prime and some who are promising prospects.

Contepomi included players who did not play at the World Cup. Scrumhalf Gonzalo García returns with Tomás Cubelli uncapped. Likewise, Tomás Albornoz is included but Nicolás Sánchez is not. Alejo Miranda reports that the door is not closed; both players could play in the Rugby Championship and/or in November.

Matías Orlando is back after missing the World Cup. Orlando joins Matías Moroni as two outside center options. Lucio Cinti is rested. The wing selections see the recalls of Santiago Cordero, Bautista Delguy and Ignacio Mendy. Delguy is on fire for Clermont while Mendy's form has been well documented by ARN.

Loosehead prop Ignacio Calles returns, as does tighthead prop Lucio Sordoni. The additional forward recalled is second-rower Lucas Paulos. Uncapped players join them among the attackers. Indeed, the list contains five uncapped forwards but only one uncapped fullback.

The six uncapped players come in two varieties: roster members and invitational players. Members of the roster are tight end Francisco Coria Marchetti (Brive, FR); flanker Bautista Pedemonte (Vannes, FR), second rower Franco Molina (Dogos) and fullback Mateo Soler (Dogos). The invited players are Bautista Bernasconi (Benetton, IT) and flanker Joaquín Moro (Pampas).
