Judge to consider whether former Trump adviser Steve Bannon should start prison sentence

Bannon was sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress.

A federal judge will consider the Justice Department's request that former Trump adviser Steve Bannon begin his four-month prison sentence in connection with his contempt of Congress conviction.

U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols is scheduled to hear arguments today in Washington, DC.

Bannon was sentenced to four months for contempt of Congress in October 2022 after being found guilty of defying a subpoena from the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol, but Judge Nichols ruled agreed to postpone the prison sentence while Bannon appealed the decision. conviction.

After the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld Bannon's conviction last month, federal prosecutors asked the judge to order Bannon to begin his four-month sentence.

Prosecutors said there was no legal basis for Judge Nichols to extend Bannon's suspension from serving his sentence after the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals' conclusive ruling that rejected the basis for the appeal of Bannon for all reasons.

“Therefore, there is no longer a 'substantial question of law that could result in a mistrial or the ordering of a new trial,'” prosecutors wrote in a document filed last month.

Bannon is expected to attend the hearing.
