Washington Superior Court Judge Jason Park denied changes to a shooting defendant's existing curfew during a June 6 hearing.

Mekhi Wilkins, 18, is charged with unlawful possession of an unregistered firearm, unlawful discharge of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and carrying a pistol without a license outside of a home or business, for his alleged involvement in a shooting that occurred on January 20 on the 1100 block of Holbrook Terrace, NE. No injuries were reported.

According to court documents, 14 gunshots were detected at the scene and a police officer allegedly observed Wilkins, who was apprehended while fleeing the scene, discarding a firearm.

Madhuri Swarna, Wilkins' defense attorney, asked Judge Park to modify Wilkins' existing curfew so he can comply with his professional obligations.

Prosecutors opposed the request, citing the nature and circumstances of the incident.

D.C. Superior Judge Jason Park denied the request to change his release conditions.

Swarna insisted that the case was based on “constructive possession”, to which Judge Park replied: “Yes, it is a gun case.” ยป

The celebrations should resume on October 11.
