Judge denies bail to man accused of stabbing 3 people

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Three victims in three Charlotte zip codes in less than 24 hours. Josiah Maitland is accused of stabbing all three. The judge denied Maitland bail on Friday.

“I kind of felt like someone was behind me, and then I started to feel the stabs on my back,” said one of Maitland's accusers who asked to hide her identity.

This blow was a knife that went through his back repeatedly. She told WCCB's Gary Brode she was walking to her car after working on Randolph Rd when CMPD says Maitland attacked her.

The victim said her scream was enough to scare him. Not before he severely damaged an artery in his hand that will require surgery to repair.

CMPD said she would be the first of three Maitland victims within 24 hours. José Tejada would be next.

“I was on my motorcycle and I saw him make a movement, but I couldn't do anything because he immediately attacked me from behind,” Tejada said.

Tejada, 66, said he was waiting at the intersection of Old Mount Holly Road when Maitland stabbed him multiple times in the neck and shoulder.

“I was afraid for my life and for my family and I asked God to help me,” Tejada said.

Tejada thinks Maitland may have been trying to steal his scooter. He said several people intervened during this attack to scare Maitland and then help him treat his injuries.

Two hours later, Maitland was accused of stabbing another woman on Freedom Drive. That victim told CMPD she was stabbed in the neck and hand while riding the bus before Maitland took off with her purse.

We did some digging and discovered 19-year-old Maitland had a history of violence. In February, he was arrested for battery. In March, he was charged with theft of a motor vehicle.

Maitland's next court appearance is scheduled for July 2.
