Jets cornerback and former Alabama prep star arrested in Morgan County

New York Jets cornerback Tae Hayes spent a little over an hour in the Morgan County Jail on Sunday after being arrested by the Trinity Police Department on a marijuana charge.

According to Morgan County Jail records, Hayes was booked into the Decatur facility at 3:46 a.m. CDT Sunday and released at 5:07 a.m. Sunday after posting $300 bond.

A former standout player at Decatur High School, Hayes was convicted of second-degree possession of marijuana.

Possession of marijuana for personal use is classified as second degree. This is punishable by up to a year in prison and a fine of up to $6,000.

During the 2023 season, Hayes spent 14 weeks on the Jets' practice squad and played in one game. He re-signed with New York on January 8.

In a statement released to the New York Post, the Jets said: “We are aware of the situation and will refrain from further comment as this is an ongoing legal matter. »

Since Hayes entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie out of Appalachian State in 2019, he has played in 14 regular season games with six teams.

Hayes played in one regular season game with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019, two with the Miami Dolphins in 2019 and 2020 and one with the Minnesota Vikings in 2020.

After being released by the Arizona Cardinals at the end of the preseason in 2021, Hayes spent the final two weeks of that season on the Carolina Panthers' practice squad without playing.

Before returning with the Panthers to training camp in 2022, Hayes helped the Birmingham Stallions win their first USFL championship.

Hayes made 37 tackles and intercepted one pass as Birmingham built a 9-1 regular season record. In the Stallions' two playoff victories, Hayes had seven tackles, an interception, three assists and a forced fumble.

In 2022, Hayes played in five games for the Panthers. After being released by Carolina on December 20, he joined the Patriots' practice squad on December 27 and played in New England's final two games of the season.

Hayes returned to the NFL after being released by the New England Patriots on June 12, 2023, signing with the Detroit Lions on August 5. Waived a week later, Hayes was claimed by the Baltimore Ravens, who cut the cornerback late in the preseason. . After spending the first month of the season on Baltimore's practice squad, Hayes signed with the Jets' practice squad on October 3, 2023.
