Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy chase ends in Broadmoor

A Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputy opened fire on a suspect after a chase that ended in Broadmoor. Sheriff Joe Lopinto said the incident began shortly before 6 p.m. Monday when deputies were alerted to a stolen vehicle in the 100 block of Airline Drive. a traffic stop after spotting the stolen car near the intersection of Jefferson Highway and Monticello Avenue. The suspect did not stop and led officers on a chase to New Orleans, officials said. Deputies said they then saw the car stopped at S. Claiborne and Jefferson Avenue and attempted to approach it. At that point, a deputy fired his gun several times at the driver, but the sheriff's office said no one was hit. The driver sped away again and led officers on another chase through Broadmoor. The pursuit ended when the driver of the stolen vehicle crashed into several poles near S. Miro and Joseph streets. The sheriff said a deputy was taken to the hospital for treatment for injuries caused by a falling live wire. Two men were arrested at the scene. Video showing one of the arrests was provided by a local witness. A JPSO spokesperson said the New Orleans Police Department will investigate the deputy's discharge of his duty weapon.

Sheriff Joe Lopinto said the incident began shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, when deputies were alerted to a stolen vehicle in the 100 block of Airline Drive.

Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop after spotting the stolen car near the intersection of Jefferson Highway and Monticello Avenue. The suspect did not stop and led officers on a chase to New Orleans, officials said.

Deputies said they then saw the car stopped at S. Claiborne and Jefferson Avenue and attempted to approach it. At that point, a police officer fired his gun several times at the driver, but the sheriff's office said no one was hit.

The driver drove off again and led deputies on another chase through Broadmoor. The pursuit ended when the driver of the stolen vehicle crashed into several poles near S. Miro and Joseph streets.

The sheriff said a deputy was taken to the hospital for treatment for injuries caused by a falling live wire.

Two men were arrested on site. Video showing one of the arrests was provided by an area witness.

A JPSO spokesperson said the New Orleans Police Department will investigate the deputy's discharge of his duty weapon.
