Jay Slater: Search for missing British teenager in Tenerife region halted by police

The search for Jay Slater in an area of ​​Tenerife has been called off, police said, nearly two weeks after he went missing.

The British teenageroriginally from Oswaldtwistle, near Blackburn in Lancashire, has been missing in Tenerife since June 17, when he disappeared the morning after a rave party.

The Civil Guard has called for volunteers to join a new search in the Masca region – near his last known location – on Saturday.

Sky News confirmed the search had ended. Police are keeping the investigation open and may launch further searches in the south of the island, but have not provided an update.

A handful of volunteers came to the aid of rescue teams on Saturday, forming a total group of 30 to 40 people covering a large area of ​​rough and hilly terrain.

Mr Slater, 19, was on holiday with friends on the Spanish island and was last pictured at Papayago, a nightclub hosting the end of the NRG festival, late on June 16.

After the event ended, he got into a car and drove to a small Airbnb in Masca with two men, who police said on Saturday were “not relevant” to the case.

His last known location was Teno Rural Park, in the north of the island, about an 11-hour walk from his accommodation.

A local cafe owner told Sky News he tried to catch a bus back to Los Cristianos, where he was staying.

Ofelia Medina Hernandez said she spoke to the teen at 8 a.m. on June 17, telling him a bus was due to arrive at 10 a.m. – but he left on foot and she said she had him then passed “while walking quickly”.

The apprentice mason called a friend who was on vacation with him on June 17 at around 8:30 a.m. and told him he was going to walk home after missing the bus.

He also told his friend he was lost and needed water, with only 1% charge on his phone.

Mr Slater's friend Brad Hargreaves told ITV's This Morning on Friday that he had a video call with him before he disappeared. when he heard him leave the road.

He said he could see his friend's feet “sliding” down the hill and hear him walking on gravel.

Meanwhile, Mr Slater's family have shared a blurry image of what they believe to be the missing teenager, captured on CCTV in a nearby town 10 hours after he first disappeared.
