Jay Slater: Police call off search for missing British teenager in Tenerife area

A search for Jay Slater in an area of ​​Tenerife has been called off, police said.

The British teenageroriginally from Oswaldtwistle, near Blackburn in Lancashire, has been missing in Tenerife since June 17, when he vanished the morning after a rave.

The Civil Guard called for volunteers on Saturday to take part in a “massive search” in the Masca area – near his last known location – and has now confirmed that it has ended.

Police are keeping the investigation open and may still launch searches in the south of the island, but have not provided an update.

A handful of volunteers came to help the rescue teams on Saturday, forming a total group of 30 to 40 people covering a large area of ​​rough and hilly terrain.

Mr Slater was on holiday with friends on the Spanish island when he visited the north-west village of Masca after attending the NRG music festival on Sunday evening.

The next morning, the apprentice mason called a friend with whom he had made the trip around 8:30 a.m. and told him he was going to walk back to his accommodation after missing the bus – a journey that would take 11 hours.

Speaking to his friend, Mr Slater also said he was lost and needed water, with only 1 per cent charge on his phone.

Since then, the local police and the Civil Guard, with Mr. Slater's familyI was looking for him.

The last person to see Mr. Slater was Masca resident Ofelia Medina Hernandez, who spoke to the teenager at 8 a.m. on Monday, June 17.

Ms Hernandez said she told him a bus was due to arrive at 10am as he was apparently hoping to return to his accommodation.

However, he started walking – and she said she then drove past him because he was “walking fast”.

Since his disappearance, rumors and conspiracy theories have emerged amid online speculation on social media.

Some social media sleuths even went to Tenerife to try to find him.
