Jay Slater: Everything we know about the missing Briton in Tenerife

Almost three days have passed since the last news of missing British teenager Jay Slater on the island of Tenerife.

The 19-year-old was on his first vacation without his family when he disappeared while walking home Monday morning.

He had gone to live with two people he had met at the NRG music festival and, after missing the last bus home, embarked on what would have been an 11-hour walk.

The apprentice mason has not been seen or heard from since he called his friend at 8:15 a.m. to tell her he was lost, needed water and that his phone battery was low.

Authorities are scouring Teno Rural Park, an area popular with hikers and believed to be its last known location.

As the search for the missing teen approaches its third day, here's everything we know about his disappearance:

Where is his last known location?

Jay Slater, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, was last heard from on Monday morning as he told a friend he planned to walk back to his accommodation after missing a bus, a journey expected to take about 11 hours on foot.

He was on the island to attend the NRG music festival with friends on his first vacation without his family.

On Sunday, her friend Lucy Mae told the Manchester Evening News that she had left the festival early and Jay was staying with friends. He then stayed in their accommodation but left in the morning to return to his own.

Lucy Mae was the last to hear from the teen when he called her at 8:15 a.m. Monday, warning her he was lost, needed water and his phone was at 1 percent. .

Lucy told the MEN that one of the people Mr Slater met drove them back to his apartment in a rental car and that the missing man did not realize how far away he was.

“He ended up in the middle of nowhere. Jay obviously thought he could go home from there,” she said.

“But in the morning he went for a walk, using his maps on his phone and found himself in the middle of the mountains with nothing around.”

Mr Slater's phone then went dead, with his final location being Teno Rural Park – a mountainous area popular with hikers in the north of the island.

Where did the authorities look?

A specialist mountain rescue team, including a police helicopter, was deployed to search for Jay.

A Civil Guard spokesperson said it was focusing on the area around the village of Masca, which is close to its last known location in the north.

On Wednesday, authorities briefly shifted their search to the south of the island, near where Jay was staying with friends in the tourist hotspots of Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas.

However, they later returned the search to Teno Rural Park after Jay's alleged sighting was deemed false.

What did his friends and family say?

Jay's friends and family have raised concerns that he may have been taken against his will.

His mother, Debbie Duncan, flew to Tenerife, in Spain's Canary Islands, on Tuesday morning to search for him.

Ms Duncan said she feared her son, who is an apprentice bricklayer, had “been taken against his will”.

She told the PA news agency: “It’s just traumatic and it doesn’t feel real. It's just horrible, it's horrible.

“I think he was arrested against his will with what was said, but that’s in the hands of the police.”

She added that the police who carried out the search had been “very efficient”.
