Jay Slater disappearance – Latest: Forensics search Tenerife home where teenager was staying as mum reveals 'agony'

Jay Slater's mother has released a heartbreaking statement days after Spanish police ended the search for the teenager who went missing more than two weeks ago in Tenerife.

Debbie Duncan thanked the Guardia Civil who she said “worked tirelessly in the mountains where Jay's last phone call was traced”.

Released by the UK charity for missing people abroad LBT Global, she said: “We are a very close family and we are absolutely devastated by his loss.

“Words cannot describe the pain and agony we are going through. He is our beautiful boy, he has his whole life ahead of him and we just want him back.”

The 19-year-old had travelled with friends to the Canary Islands to attend the NRG music festival, before returning to a remote AirBnb with two Britons he had met in Playa de Las Americas.

He called his friend at 8:50 a.m. to tell him he was lost in the Teno Rural Park, without water and that he had only one percent battery on his phone.

He had stayed with two people he had met at the NRG music festival and, having missed the bus home, set off on what would have been an 11-hour walk.

“We are a very close family and are absolutely devastated by his passing.

“Words cannot describe the pain and agony we are going through. He is our beautiful boy, he has his whole life ahead of him and we just want him back.

“We have no information about his whereabouts.

“The Guardia Civil worked tirelessly in the mountains where Jay's last phone call was traced. They conducted field searches for 12 days, mobilizing all the resources at their disposal.

“Although the search for the land has been completed, the Spanish police are still investigating why Jay went to a place so far from his home.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the Spanish authorities who continue to follow up on the leads in the investigation.

“We want to tell the press/journalists that while we do not want to lose the momentum of Jay's disappearance, we really want to preserve our privacy and above all let the Spanish police continue their investigations without being bothered by the press.

“We are aware of the conspiracy theories and speculation on social media and some websites and can only describe this as despicable, the negative comments are extremely distressing for our family.

“We also acknowledge the love and support we have received from around the world. This has not gone unnoticed, particularly in his hometown of Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire.

“As a family, we would like the world to respect our privacy at this time.”
