Japanese streetwear brand BAPE opens its first store in Chicago, near the Gold Coast

Japanese streetwear brand BAPE launched a new store in Chicago on Wednesday, joining a list of 40 global locations in New York, Los Angeles and Miami in the United States, as well as Japan, Seoul, London, Paris and more other places.

The two-story, 5,000-square-foot space at 113 E. Oak St. near the Gold Coast includes a clear resin stage. and original works of art. Its influences include “art institutions, luxury automobile design, futuristic films and virtual reality,” BAPE said in a statement.

In the elegant store, life-size silver shark-head statues flank the shop's staircase. Rows of trendy sneakers appear to float on transparent shelves in front of a window with a view of leafy trees. Hats, hoodies, rugs and upholstery feature BAPE's distinctive camouflage patterns.

“This place will be a gallery of expression, highlighted through product, architecture, artwork and, most importantly, the community that will bring our space to life,” said Mahmoud el Salahy, CEO of the BAPE. “We believe retail is about creating destinations for changemakers, relationships and co-creation. »

The global streetwear market size was $195.5 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach nearly $278.79 billion by 2032, according to Value Market Research. Popular brands include HUF, Stussy, Nike, Carhartt WIP, Undefeated, Adidas, Supreme, BAPE and others.

BAPE, which means “A Swimming Ape,” was founded in Japan in 1993 in Harajuku, a district of Tokyo known for its youth culture and trendy boutiques. BAPE refers to the film “Planet of the Apes” and the Japanese expression “a monkey bathing in lukewarm water” which describes someone who abuses it.

Founder Nigo was a magazine editor and stylist before launching BAPE and was also a musician, DJ and record producer.

The new space features a range of t-shirts, hoodies, accessories and souvenirs featuring BAPE's iconic camouflage patterns that are inspired by the red and blue flag of the city of Chicago.

BAPE Chicago features custom works by Indonesian contemporary artist Arkiv Vilmansa and graffiti artist Josh “Stash” Franklin. Vilmansa has created pieces in his cartoon-inspired style that incorporate elements of BAPE.

The brand also revealed collaborations with locals, like one featuring designer and Chicago native Don C., design consultant for the Chicago Bulls and former manager of rapper Kanye West.

BAPE has been affiliated with musicians, rappers and artists such as Pharrell, Biggie Smalls, Beastie Boys, Lil' Wayne and others.

In addition to clothing, BAPE's products include artwork, furniture and toys. Prices for high-end items can reach $500 for a hoodie, $300 for sneakers and $150 for hats.
