Jacquez Harris identified as victim in North Lawndale shooting at party honoring Kenneka Jenkins of Rosemont

CHICAGO– One person was killed and three others injured in a shooting early Sunday in North Lawndale, police said.

A group of people, including a 28-year-old man, a 33-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman, were in the 1300 block of South Christiana Avenue around 3 a.m. when someone One fired shots, Chicago police said.

Three of the victims were taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center. Jacquez Harris, 28, was pronounced dead, police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

The older woman was in fair condition, with gunshot wounds to her legs, and the younger woman was in good condition after being shot in the left leg, police said. The other man went to Rush University Medical Center, where he was found to be in good condition.

Neighbors said the shooting happened after a block party for Kenneka Jenkins, a 19-year-old woman who died while locked in a freezer at a Rosemont hotel in 2017. She lived in the neighborhood.

The holiday honors Jenkins' memory and has been held every year around his birthday, May 27, since his death, neighbors said. Crowds gathered for the party this weekend on Douglas Boulevard, between Homan and Spaulding avenues. Empty alcohol bottles, red cups and pink banners littered the area Tuesday.

A neighbor said he was in his bedroom when he heard at least 25 gunshots.
