Jacksonville woman arrested and charged with carjacking after elderly victim stopped her from escaping in Ormond Beach

ORMOND BEACH, Florida. – A Jacksonville woman accused of trying to carjack an elderly couple in Ormond Beach was arrested after police arrived and found one of the victims holding her leg, according to a news release.

News4JAX sister station WKMG reported that Marvette Perry, 36, faces charges of carjacking, burglary with battery, battery on a person 65 or older and resisting a police officer without violence, records show.

Officers responded to a reported vehicle theft around 10:50 a.m. Saturday at an Exxon gas station along North U.S. Highway 1, the Ormond Beach Police Department announced on social media. At the scene, police said they found one of the SUV's occupants holding Perry's leg and preventing him from escaping while an armed good Samaritan stood nearby. The press release states that the good Samaritan drew his firearm at one point, but put it away once he saw that Perry was not reaching for a weapon and reminded him that he was armed until officers arrived.

Perry was secured after resisting arrest, police said, adding that the SUV's owners were not injured.

“Our officer's quick response, the courage of the Good Samaritan and the resilience of the elderly couple helped prevent a potentially dangerous situation from escalating,” said Ormond Beach Police Chief Robert “Jesse” Godfrey , in a press release.

Perry's arrest affidavit offers more details about the incident, such as the victims' account of what happened. The victim who held Perry in place told police he exited Interstate 95 and began parking at the Exxon to use the restroom after Perry had already started to open his door. Perry allegedly pushed the victim out of the way and sat in the driver's seat of the SUV. What the victim said prompted him to hold on to Perry's leg because he believed she intended to steal the vehicle even though his wife was still sitting in the front seat. seat.

The gunman also spoke to police, telling them he was pumping gas shortly before the incident. He said he picked up his gun because he saw Perry acting “weird” and he quickly drew the gun when he saw Perry running toward the man and attempting to steal his vehicle, the affidavit states .

Perry was being held without bail Sunday morning and her first court appearance was scheduled for 8:30 a.m., records show.
