Jackson neighborhood shocked and upset by deadly shooting

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — Early Morning death shot of Sherrod Slayton, 35, left a Jackson neighborhood in shock.

Jackson Police said that around 2:51 a.m. this morning, officers responded to the 600 block of Elizabeth Street for a shooting.

When police arrived on scene, they found Slayton in a parking lot with a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.

Kris Minix owns Avenues Gentlemen's Club, across the street from the parking lot where Slayton died.

“It’s very upsetting,” Minix said.

He said staff at his club, which closed around 2:20 a.m., saw a crowd forming near a food truck.

“She said there was starting to be a big crowd near Elizabeth Street, gathering to look for food,” Minix said. “There was no fight at that time.”

Minix said social media posts alerted him and his team to the shooting. A bar manager had returned to check the building. Minix said the manager saw several first responders filling the street.

“EMS, police, fire trucks, it looked like it was daytime, that's how many people are out here with their lights…on,” Minix said.

Police said an initial investigation revealed there had been a fight between Slayton and another man, who was considered a suspect. They say Slayton was running in the parking lot when he was shot.
