Isaias Robles-Nieves arrested in death of 1-year-old child in New Castle, Pennsylvania.

NEW CASTLE, Pa. (WKBN) — The New Castle Police Department has arrested a man in connection with the murder of a 1-year-old child on January 19, 2023.

Isaias Robles-Nieves, 21, was arrested Tuesday on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children. Robles-Nieves was identified in a criminal complaint as the boyfriend of the child's mother.

On January 19, 2023, the New Castle Police Department responded to a home in the 700 block of Altman Road for a report that a 1-year-old child was unconscious and not breathing. The child was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

During an autopsy, doctors found the child had significant injuries that authorities say are common in cases of child abuse, particularly in shaken baby syndrome and/or trauma incidents. blunt. The cause of death was ruled to be blunt force trauma to the head and body.

During their investigation, police discovered a hole in the master bedroom closet door and conducted DNA testing. Based on this evidence, doctors agreed that if an adult held a child and slammed them against a wall, hitting their head and creating damage, that would be consistent with the injuries seen on the child.

The complaint says the child had previously been treated for a leg injury, where the bone was fractured in two places, and had to be placed in a walking boot. She adds that the child suffered an additional leg injury, detected during a follow-up appointment for the previous one. Doctors were told the injury was caused when the child's leg got caught between the bars of a crib, but they said if that was the case, the child would only have suffered one injury. only one fracture, not two.

In interviews with police, the child's mother said the baby was home alone with Robles-Nieves when he called her from work to tell her the child was unresponsive. She said she never saw Robles-Nieves be violent with any of her children, according to the criminal complaint.

Police State Robles-Nieves was arraigned by Magistrate Amodie and placed in the Lawrence County Jail without bail. He is expected to return to court for a preliminary hearing on July 3.
