Is Sarim Burney behind a human trafficking network?

ISLAMABAD: Social worker Sarim Burney's lawyer on Monday said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had made “baseless” allegations against his client in a human trafficking case. Burney was arrested on June 5 after landing at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi following his visit to the United States.

The Karachi East Judicial Magistrate heard the bail application of Sarim Burney in the human trafficking case. Burney's lawyer argued that the FIA made baseless allegations without proper investigation. He explained that the toddler had been left at the hospital by the parents themselves. Now, allegations that he received Rs 3 million are being raised.

The lawyer said adoption of children follows a designated process. He said the FIA had failed to prove its allegations. The court sought a response from the FIA on Sarim Burney's bail application.

The FIA has registered a first information report (FIR) against Sarim Burney. They accused him of trafficking newborns to the United States. The FIR alleges that Burney trafficked a newborn baby named Haya to the United States. The investigating agency claims that Haya was bought from her parents for Rs 1 million. Burney is accused of trafficking 20 newborns to the United States over the past year under the guise of adoption. The FIA says 15 of the trafficked children were girls.
