Iowa Park man receives suspended sentence for drunk driving

An Iowa Park man was given a suspended sentence and probation in connection with a crash in late 2022 that killed one man and injured two others, according to court documents.

Jerry Ashton Tidwell, 24, pleaded guilty Friday to intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault with a vehicle and was sentenced to a 10-year suspended prison sentence, probation and a $3,000 fine.

Drunken manslaughter is punishable by up to 20 years in prison, and drunken vehicular assault is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

The death plea was finalized in 30th District Court two days after Tidwell was indicted on the charges.

Around 12:50 a.m. on Dec. 23, 2022, a pickup truck crashed into a concrete barrier at the intersection of Iowa Park Road and Sheppard Access Road, according to court documents.

Two men were thrown from the pickup. One man, Toby Hasten, 25, of Wichita Falls, died at a hospital four days later from his injuries.

The other man who was thrown and a third man in the van were injured.

Police said at the time they suspected alcohol was a factor in the crash and said the men had spent the night bar hopping before the crash.

Tidwell was arrested on July 13, 2023, and released on bail the same day, according to online jail records.
