Iowa man sentenced to federal prison for gun possession

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A man who owned a gun as a felon and used illegal drugs was sentenced June 7, 2024, to more than four years in federal prison.

Riley Joe Morris Brekke, 24, of Clear Lake, Iowa, was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and an illegal drug user.

In a plea agreement, Brekke admitted that on May 11, 2023, while outside a liquor store in Mason City, he was approached by Mason City police officers regarding arrest warrants not executed for probation violation and escape. Brekke fled from the police, was caught and arrested. As he ran, Brekke threw away the backpack he was carrying. During a search of Brekke, officers found a needle and a bag of methamphetamine on his person. They also found a gun, ammunition, marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the backpack he discarded.

He was previously convicted of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine in Cerro Gordo County in 2022.

Brekke was sentenced to 54 months in prison. He must also serve three years of supervised release following his sentence.

Brekke is being held by the United States Marshal until he can be transported to a federal prison.
