Interlaken fire 'comes from abandoned campfire' | News

This afternoon, authorities were briefed by a U.S. Forest Service investigator on the causes of the Interlaken fire.

Wednesday at 8 p.m., the USFS reported on the Interlaken Fire Information Facebook page that the fire “was determined to originate from an abandoned campfire located approximately 200 feet from the Interlaken Trail and 1.5 miles “This campfire was not properly extinguished and continued to burn.”

They included a photo of the ring of fire believed to have started the Interlaken fire.

“Currently, officials have no leads as to who left the fire unattended,” we can read on Facebook. “The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Forest Service will use a hotline and other information platforms to identify potential suspects.”

If you have information regarding campers experiencing a fire near Interlaken Station between June 7, 2024 and June 11, 2024, please call the Tip Line at 303-275-5266.

“Remember, if your campfire is too hot to touch, do not leave it or fall asleep. The whitish or gray coals can retain heat for long periods of time and may ignite if the wind blows. lifts,” the USFS said in its message. “Rock rings should be properly constructed, away from flammable materials such as pine needles and twigs, and with no gaps between rocks. Use water and stir the ashes until they are cool to the touch . You are responsible for keeping fires under control.”
