Inside Out 2 creators reveal they consulted teen counselors to shape Riley's character for her generation

The creators of Inside Out 2 revealed that they met with a group of teen counselors to better understand teen behavior and shape Riley's character accordingly. The sequel to the 2015 film hit theaters last week and received a lot of love from audiences. Director Kelsey Mann, in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly, revealed that the crew members needed an accurate idea of all the emotions a 13-year-old could feel.

What did director Kelsey Mann reveal about seeing teen counselors?

When discussing the behind-the-scenes of Inside Out 2, director Kelsey Mann said he had to go straight to the source to study a teenager's behavior. Riley's character in the franchise's first film was still a baby and the main emotions, including joy, sadness, anger, disgust, and fear, were already inserted into her mind.

However, in the latest version, the main character has become a teenager and has reached puberty. To match the emotions a 13-year-old would feel, the filmmaker said he consulted teenage focus groups.

Additionally, Mann added, “Basically we had a Zoom room full of 13-year-old counselors to watch every screening of the film and give us feedback.” He added: “Making a Pixar movie is a never-ending conversation with a lot of very smart people from all walks of life, including a room full of 13-year-old girls. We talked to teachers and doctors and all that, but it is an amalgamation of human experiences.
