California Highway Patrol officers are searching for a man who shot into a crowded transit bus Monday night, injuring an innocent woman, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. on a Foothill Express bus that was carrying about 20 people westbound on the 10 Freeway.

A CHP spokesperson said two men on the bus got into “an altercation” when one of them pulled out a gun and started shooting as the bus approached Puente Avenue in Baldwin Park.

“The passenger was hit. Whether it was a ricochet or a direct hit, we don’t know at this time,” said CHP Lt. Saul Gomez.

The bus driver stopped on the side of the highway, where the shooter got off the bus and fled, officials said.

The shooting victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No other passengers were injured.

“The bus is equipped with multiple security cameras, and immediately following this evening's incident, our team was dispatched…we were able to transmit that footage to the CHP,” said Doran Barnes, CEO of Foothill Transit.

The shooter was described only as a Hispanic man in his 30s. Anyone with information was asked to call police.

Foothill Transit serves the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys.
