Indictments for suspects charged in Springfield officer shooting

SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – Five of the seven suspects charged in a brazen shooting Wednesday that left a Springfield police officer injured faced a judge Friday morning before a massive crowd of officers who showed their support for Agent Nestor Santos. .

It was standing room only inside Springfield District Court. More than 100 police officers, inside and outside the courtroom, were present during the arraignment of suspects involved in the shooting of Santos, who suffered gunshot wounds to the face and back leg.

Springfield police identified the officer this morning as Nestor Santos, a seven-year veteran. He received the Springfield Police Department's Medal of Valor in 2023 and a lifesaving award for his actions in saving a boy from drowning in 2015.

Santos underwent surgery and doctors were able to save the eye injured in the shooting, but doctors say he will likely lose vision in the eye. Springfield police also said Santos still had a bullet fragment lodged in his head and would likely need further surgeries before being released.

We spoke with Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni, who called the family earlier this morning, and he told us how the Santos family is doing.

“They are emotional. They are taken aback. I mean, it's been less than 48 hours at this point. He will suffer very serious injuries for the rest of his life. They really appreciated that call, a nice phone call. It was emotional, but I think they are obviously in shock,” Gulluni said.
