Indiana University student Lauren Spierer, missing for 13 years, at the center of new true crime book | WDRB News

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Indiana University student Lauren Spierer was last seen June 3, 2011, after spending an evening with friends in Bloomington.

As his family marks the 13th anniversary of his disappearance, a new book is published by a New York Times reporter who covered the story from the beginning.

Shawn Cohen's “College Girl, Missing: The True Story of How a Young Woman Disappeared in Plain Sight” focuses on how the case goes unsolved.

Bloomington police said Spierer was heading home but never arrived at her apartment at the intersection of West 9th Street and North College Avenue. She was reported missing later that day.

In a post on the family's social media, Charlene Spierer said their relationship with Cohen had changed over the years.

“I have come to believe that our missions to find Lauren, get answers, and bring justice are aligned,” Spierer’s mother wrote. “Much more than just a story for Shawn all these years later, I truly believe he genuinely wants to put an end to our family's nightmare.”

Charlene Spierer said in her post that reading the book was difficult, but there were details in the case that they didn't even learn about.

“I can’t say it wasn’t hard to read, because it was,” she wrote. “Most things we knew. Some things we didn't. We are still fiercely protective of Lauren. Not having answers, not knowing which scenario is right, still waiting but no longer hoping to bring Lauren's remains home is atrocious.”

Charlene Spierer said that after 13 years, she hopes the book will help discover new information and facts first-hand.

“Some people will be hearing about Lauren for the first time,” she wrote. “Some people will have forgotten and moved on. What I hope is that some people will remember and finally come forward.”
