Indiana State Police: Harrison County shooting leaves 2 dead, 1 injured

HARRISON COUNTY, Ind. — A shooting in Harrison County left two people dead and another injured Friday.

According to a news release, first responders received a 911 call around 6 p.m. about a shooting that happened in the 3000 block of Mosquito Creek Road near Laconia. Local Harrison County police and Indiana State Police responded to the scene to investigate the information provided by the 911 caller.

When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult male who had been shot in the arm. The man said he ran from the scene of the shooting to a nearby residence to call for help.

ISP described the man's injuries as “non-life threatening.” He was still transported from the scene to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment.

Eventually, law enforcement located the residence where the shooting took place. Upon arrival at the home, police attempted to make contact with anyone who may have been in the area.

According to the ISP, attempts by law enforcement to make contact with the people present at the scene were unsuccessful. As a result, police entered the residence and found two people dead: an adult male and an adult female. ISP identified the deceased as Donald Ray Weaver, 84, and Virginia Y. Scofield, 82.

After an investigation, detectives determined that Weaver and the man he shot had gotten into a verbal argument before the shooting. The man attempted to leave the residence during the verbal argument, but Weaver shot him with a handgun.

ISP said after the man was shot in the arm, more gunshots were heard coming from the home. Police believe Weaver shot the man in the arm, shot Scofield, then turned the gun on himself.

Police are still investigating the incident. The Harrison County Coroner's Office and other local law enforcement agencies are assisting the ISP.

At the time of publication of this article, no additional information about the incident was available.
