Indiana: Father dead, two teenagers injured after grenade explodes at their home

A father died and two of his children were injured after a hand grenade exploded in an Indiana home, authorities said.

The family was going through a grandfather's belongings when they found the grenade in their Lakes home Saturday in Four Seasons, Indiana. The Lake County Sheriff's Department said someone “pulled the pin on the device and it exploded.”

Officers responded to the explosion around 6 p.m. local time on Saturday. They found an unconscious man and two injured teenagers, the sheriff's department told USA TODAY on Monday.

The sheriff's department said the grenade “appeared” to have exploded in the garage.

“Investigators are still trying to determine elements of the case, including but not limited to: whether the device could have detonated automatically due to its age or other factors, whether the pin was removed or whether other circumstances may have been involved,” the statement said. The sheriff's department told USA TODAY.

The sheriff's department said the father was later pronounced deceased. Responders took her two children, a 14-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman, to the hospital with shrapnel wounds, the sheriff's department said.

Officers called the Porter County Bomb Squad to secure the area and “determine if there may be additional explosive devices,” the sheriff’s department said.

Lake County Sheriff's Department homicide detectives and the CSI unit were investigating.
