Indian teenager driving Porsche that killed two people sentenced to write essay

An Indian court has granted bail to a drunken teenager who crashed his Porsche into a motorcycle and killed two people, on condition he “write an essay” about the incident.

The court also asked the 17-year-old boy from Pune in the western state of Maharashtra to seek treatment for his drinking, attend counseling sessions and work with police local for 15 days.

The teenager, whose name has not been released, is the son of a prominent real estate tycoon, and the judge's leniency sparked outrage across the country.

The accident took place around 3:15 am on Sunday at Kalyani Nagar in Pune.

A group of friends were returning home on their motorcycles after a party at a local restaurant. When they reached the Kalyani Nagar intersection, one of their motorcycles was hit by the teenager's Porsche, police said, causing both drivers to fall and die instantly.

After hitting the bikers, the teenager crashed his car into some gates, according to police.

A video widely shared on social media shows a group of bystanders attacking the driver as he tries to get out of the vehicle.

The deceased have been identified as software engineers Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both aged 25.

A complaint was filed against the driver at a local police station and he was charged with reckless driving, causing death by a reckless or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide and endangering the life or personal safety of a person.

The accused is said to be four months shy of turning 18, the minimum legal age to drive a car in India.

He was reportedly out celebrating his Class 12 exam results.

He was traveling at 200 km/h when he collided with the motorcycle.

The boy's lawyer Prashant Patil said, “The juvenile accused who was arrested by the Pune police has been granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Board on certain conditions, including that the accused should work with the Yerawada traffic police for 15 days, write an essay on the accident, receive treatment from the doctor concerned to help him stop drinking and undergo psychiatric counselling and submit the report.”

Police said they would appeal the bail order and treat the accused as an adult.

“We will leave no stone unturned to prove that this is a heinous crime,” Pune police chief Amitesh Kumar said. India today.

Police also arrested the boy's father and the owners of two bars that allegedly served him alcohol.

The legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25 years.

“We are in shock,” Jugal Kishor Koshta, the uncle of one of the victims, told NDTV. “It is condemnable that he is being released on bail within 15 hours. He and his parents should be investigated. We will discuss the matter tomorrow after Ashwini’s last rites are over.”

Sanjay Raut, a senior member of the opposition Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra, accused Pune police of serving pizza and burgers to the accused teenager after the accident. India today reported.
