Indian student missing in California found safe after a week

A 23-year-old Indian student who went missing in California last week has been found safe, police confirmed Tuesday.

Nitheesha Kandula, student at California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB), had been missing since May 28 in Los Angeles. His disappearance caused concern in the community and led to a police search.

John Guttierez, CSUSB Police Chief, announced the news on social media.

“The missing student identified in this bulletin, reported missing on May 28, 2024 in Los Angeles, has been found and is safe!” Guttierez posted to X, without providing further details about his location.

Police had earlier made a public appeal for information on Nitheesha's whereabouts.

Police reports further claimed that Kandula was driving a California-registered Toyota Corolla car.

Nitheesha, from Hyderabad, is one of many Indian students in the United States who have recently gone missing.

The Indian community has been alarmed by a series of such incidents.

Last month, 26 years old Rupesh Chandra Chintakind, another Indian student, disappeared in Chicago.

In a more tragic case, Mohammad Abdul Arfath, a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who had been missing since March, was found dead in Cleveland in April.

Arfath had come to the United States in May of the previous year to pursue a master's degree in computer science at Cleveland University.
