MARLBORO COUNTY, SC (WBTW) — Acting Marlboro County Sheriff Larry McNeil appears headed for victory in Tuesday's Democratic primary against challenger Sammy Crosland and former Sheriff Fred Knight.

With 100% of precincts reporting, McNeil received 1,597 votes (51.65%). Knight received 866 votes (28.01%) and Crosland received 629 votes (20.34%).

Marlboro County's top elected law enforcement official has been out of office since 2021, when Gov. Henry McMaster suspended Democrat Charles Lemon over charges of misconduct in office and assault and battery of a serious and aggravated nature.

The charges against Lemon were dropped, but he is still awaiting trial in federal court and could be imprisoned for 10 years if convicted.

McNeil was appointed by McMaster to finish out Lemon's term, and now he's set to become his replacement. He will face Republican Charles English in November.

“I'm very grateful. I thank God for this opportunity, another opportunity to continue to work in the community,” McNeil told News13. “I think it says a lot about our community and what we've done in the past, and they can see what we've tried to do in the past in trying to continue to move forward and be as progressive as we are. can.”

Tuesday's results are not official until certified.
