Illegal migrant wanted for homicide in Dominican Republic arrested in Massachusetts

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials announced Tuesday the arrest of an illegal migrant wanted for homicide in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican national entered the country in October 2015 as a nonimmigrant visitor, an ICE statement said. He left the United States that month, but returned illegally at an unknown date and time, according to federal officials.

Dominican authorities issued an arrest warrant for the unnamed immigrant in April 2024. A conviction on this charge carried a possible sentence of 30 years in prison.

The migrant was arraigned on June 20 in Westborough, Massachusetts, on charges of trespassing and theft. Immigration officials arrested him the same day. He will remain in ICE custody pending the outcome of removal proceedings against him, officials said.

This Dominican fugitive is a suspected murderer who fled to Massachusetts rather than face justice in his home country,” said Todd Lyons, director of the ERO Boston Field Office. “We will not allow our New England communities to become havens for criminals from around the world. ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by apprehending and removing egregious non-citizen offenders from our neighborhoods.

This encounter is one of several recent criminal arrests of non-citizens by ICE. The agency announced this month the arrest of a Guatemalan national after the individual allegedly raped a child in Massachusetts.

ICE also reported the arrest of an Ecuadorian national near Worcester, Massachusetts. He was wanted in his country of origin for rape.

Massachusetts continues to struggle to accommodate the influx of migrants arriving in the state to take advantage of its “right to sanctuary” law. Gov. Maura Healey sent five state officials to Texas this week to try to discourage migrants from making the journey north to Massachusetts.
