'Illegal Casino' Closed in Gwinnett County, 2 Men Arrested

The Gwinnett County Police Department shut down an illegal casino operating out of Sosa's Billiards in unincorporated Norcross, arresting 10 people on gambling-related charges.

The search took place June 18 at 6070 S. Norcross Tucker Road, following an investigation that began in 2023. The investigation was initiated when a patrol officer conducted a traffic stop and the occupant of the vehicle revealed that he had just left a “casino” in the area.

“They stated they were leaving a nearby casino,” said Cpl. Juan Madiedo of the Gwinnet County Police Department.

Undercover officers from the vice unit then went to Sosa's pool hall and confirmed the illegal gambling activities.

“Indeed, we were able to observe illegal games taking place on site,” said Cpl. Madiédo. “It seems like it was poker for money that was happening.”

Steven Bae Kim, 66, of Duluth, identified as the owner of the establishment, was charged with commercial gambling, operating a gambling venue and gambling. Seth Abernathy, 40, of Auburn, identified as an employee, was charged with commercial gambling. Eight other people were arrested and charged with gambling.

The search warrant also led to the seizure of drugs and money.

“A few firearms were seized, drugs and money were also seized,” said Cpl. Madiédo.

Police say crimes like illegal gambling may seem harmless until they escalate into something more serious and violent.

“The problem comes when bad guys come to that location and try to rob the place, and someone ends up getting hurt,” said Cpl. Madiédo.

Both men have since posted bond.

Investigators believe additional arrests are possible.
