Identifying “killer bees” and how to deal with them

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – Africanized honey bees, also known as killer bees, have been confirmed in northern Alabama counties.

State apiary inspector Phillip Carter said it can be difficult to identify these bees from typical European honey bees.

“Visually, you can’t tell,” Carter said. “Don’t think you can stand there and watch the difference because it’s not going to happen.”

Carter said the easiest way to identify bees is to observe the swarms and aggressive behavior of Africanized bees.

“European bees will come after you, but it may be a small number,” Carter said. “With Africanized bees, hundreds and hundreds of bees can attack you and it doesn’t take much to provoke them.”

These bees can be introduced into an area in a variety of ways, including through shipping, transportation, and purchase by beekeepers without being properly tested.

This can pose a major obstacle for the bees already present in the area.

“They can outnumber a European colony and settle their queen there because of their genetics,” Carter said.

Carter recommends if you encounter unusually aggressive hives or swarms to call someone who can remove the hive, including the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries or the Wiregrass Beekeepers Association.

“Don’t provoke them. Don't do anything to them. “Carter said. “Call a qualified beekeeper to take care of it and be careful.”
