IDENTIFIED: 16-year-old dead after drowning in Shaver Lake | YourCentralValley.com

SHAVER LAKE, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The 16-year-old who died after drowning in Shaver Lake over the weekend has been officially identified by the Fresno County Coroner's Office.

Authorities announced Monday that the victim was Alejandro Araujo, 16, of Orosi. He was a student at Orosi High School and was finishing his first year.

According to the Fresno County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to Shaver Lake around 12:40 p.m. after dispatch received a report of a 16-year-old who had jumped from a pontoon boat near Camp Chawankee, in inside the Sierra National Forest, and never resurfaced.

Divers finally recovered Araujo's body about an hour later, at 1:50 p.m., about 15 feet below the water's surface.

Deputies say Araujo was visiting the lake with friends and when he fell under an adult on the boat, he went into the water to try to help. Araujo was wearing a life jacket at the time, but it was placed around his neck and not tied around his body, causing him to slip when he entered the water. It was later learned that Araujo could not swim well.
