ID man killed in Minneapolis shooting

MINNEAPOLIS — Authorities have identified a man killed Thursday in a shooting that injured four people and killed two others, including a Minneapolis police officer.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said in a statement Saturday that Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, 35, died outside 2109 Blaisdell Avenue on May 30 from multiple gunshot wounds.

The cause of death was ruled a homicide.

Minneapolis police said officers were responding to a report of a shooting at an apartment building in the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue in the Whittier neighborhood around 5:15 p.m. Thursday, when the situation has worsened.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said the officers were “ambushed” while responding. BCA Superintendent Drew Evans told reporters that Officer Mitchell got out of his vehicle after noticing injured people about two blocks from the scene of the reported shooting. While attempting to provide medical assistance, Evans said, Mitchell was ambushed. Evans told reporters he had watched video of the shooting, describing it as a close encounter.

A news release from the medical examiner's office issued Friday said Minneapolis officer Jamal Mitchell died from “multiple gunshot wounds” and called the circumstances of the death a “homicide.”

A second person killed in the shooting was identified as Osman Said Jimale, 32, of Minneapolis; The medical examiner said Jimale also died from “multiple gunshot wounds” in a “homicide.”
