Teen admits to being drunk in fatal crash

What is the story

The 17-year-old Pune boy accused in the Porsche crash case told police that he was drunk and did not remember the incident. NDTV reported.

The teenager is currently being housed in an observation home while the Juvenile Justice Board deliberates on a police request to try him as an adult.

He was reportedly filmed drinking shortly before the accident.

Why is this story important?

Two IT professionals, Aneesh Awadhiya (24) and Ashwini Koshta (24), were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a speeding Porsche, allegedly driven by the 17-year-old, in the early hours of May 19.

According to investigators, the teenager was intoxicated at the time.

However, the JJB granted the teenager bail 15 hours after the incident, subject to certain conditions, including writing a 300-word essay on road accidents.

The teenager was then sent to an observation home in Yerawada until June 5, following criticism.

Several charges and arrests following the accident

Police are trying to recover the minor's original blood sample, which was allegedly exchanged to show he was not drinking.

To recall, on Saturday, the Pune police arrested the teenager's mother for allegedly swapping her blood sample with his.

This is the fourth arrest within the family, after those of the minor, his father and his grandfather.

Earlier, police informed a local court that the minor's blood samples were allegedly replaced with those of a woman.

The police are building a case against the teenager

Police are now working to build a “watertight” case against the teenager, even without the potentially contaminated blood tests.

The boy's father was arrested a day after the accident while apparently trying to orchestrate an escape plan.

He is accused of endangering his son's health, forgery, cheating and criminal association.

Additionally, two doctors and a peon were arrested by the police for allegedly manipulating the blood report of the 17-year-old accused.

Car traveling at 200 km/h: Witnesses

Witnesses reported that the car was traveling at 200 km/h when it hit the bicycle carrying the victims.

The impact was so violent that both victims were thrown into parked cars and into the air.

Koshta died on the spot, while Awadhiya later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The teen's friends, who were present during the incident, corroborated his claims that he was drunk.

A teenager faces 6 months in prison

Notably, the JJB is currently considering a request to try the teenager as an adult for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. If convicted of a first offense of drunk driving, he faces up to six months in jail and a fine of ₹10,000.
