“I Really Don’t Care” — Dolly Parton Has the Perfect Response to a Teenager Who Tells Her He Doesn’t Like Country Music

Classic Dolly.

She could be one of them, otherwise THE, the world's funniest music stars and mrs. Dolly Parton is always ready to give a great answer during interviews or whenever she interacts with fans.

And I came across a great event of all time that happened to him Dolly Parton Meets the Kids A 1983 television special in which she answered questions from five Los Angeles teenagers about her life, music, growing up in the Smoky Mountains and more.

One kid in particular, a 15-year-old (so we'll give him a break) named Paul told her point blank that he didn't like country music and wanted her to know so he could be “honest and open.” He asked in a very polite manner and I really don't think he meant to be offensive:

“To be honest and open with you, I don't really like country music.”

But Dolly being Dolly, she was full of great responsiveness and smiled as she said to Paul:

“Well, to be honest and open with you, I really don’t care.”

I think she was partly joking, but Paul followed up his question by saying he wanted to try to understand her because there is clearly something there since so many people like her:

“I was just curious what people who really like it see in it… I think maybe the reason I don't like it is that I don't understand it.”

Dolly gave a thoughtful response, saying she understands why someone her age wouldn't necessarily like the sad stories and deeper nature of country music, and that she's not a fan of a lot of the “cheesy” stuff herself (though she admitted to recording some of those songs, too):

“I can understand that you don't like it, I don't like it much myself and I grew up with country music. But I think country music is music that you have to listen to, and most kids your age don't have time to really listen to just the sad stories.

You prefer to listen to something that you like and can dance to at the same time. So there's nothing wrong with not liking country music, I love it… I don't like corn pone country music. Even though I've made a lot of it myself.

Well, the cheesiest, the most lame, and I can understand that you don't like a lot of things. But there are a lot of things that you would enjoy if you really put your mind to it. That's the kind of thing you have to get into.

And who knows if Paul ever became a country music fan, but at least I have to imagine he became a Dolly Parton fan and that's enough for me:
