In a Reddit post shared on r/AmILheAsshole (AITA), a user on the site said she lives with her husband and their seven-year-old daughter.

“My daughter and I recently took a short trip out of state while my husband stayed because he was working and was supposed to take care of our dog,” she wrote.

But on the last day they were gone, her “distraught” husband called to let them know their dog, Ellie, had run away and he hadn't been able to find her.

“He claimed she ran away from him in the park, into some bushes and he couldn't find her,” the original poster (OP) wrote.

She had her suspicions

Ellie, the dog in question, is a 13 year old mini poodle mix. And even though the dog is still active, “it's really unlike him to run away from us and I was suspicious,” OP says.

Nonetheless, she “chose to believe that my husband, my daughter and I were grieving, but she didn’t want to blame him.”

When they returned, she said her husband seemed “surprisingly well.”

“Since the pandemic, my husband started working from home and he was always annoyed by the attention we gave to Ellie and hated the way Ellie begged to sit on our laps and his while he was working,” she added.

Then they got a call

A few days later, the family received a call on their landline – it's not a number most people call – because someone had found their dog and called the contact on the dog's microchip. 'Ellie. The call came from a rather distant place.

The author of the post says she accepted the call, which turned out to be from an animal rescue center that had found Ellie. “I told my husband and he just said 'that's great, I'm so happy', but it seemed a bit blunt and insincere,” she said.

When the poster said that the circumstances of the dog's alleged escape seemed strange, how did it come to this? – the poster's husband “replied that someone must have stolen it and then abandoned it.”

This has not been verified by OP

The author of the post said she didn't think it made complete sense.

So, “When he was drinking with his friends, I copied his dashcam videos for the days I was away and saw that he had indeed taken Ellie out of state, and had clearly dropped in front of her car throwing a frisbee – like an object in a field, shouted “fetch” and left without her.

She said she was “furious” and confronted her husband. When challenged, “he just mumbled stupidly about how he dropped her off there so she could find a farm and have a better life, then the next day he got really angry at me for watching his dashcam.”

People had *thoughts* in the comments

Unsurprisingly, commenters weren't fans of the poster's husband.

“Keep your dog and your daughter and leave the husband in another state to find another family he would have a better life with,” one commenter said.

Another Reddit user begged the poster to never leave Ellie with her husband again, saying: “He didn't dump her in a shelter, he left an elderly dog alone to starve or freeze to death . A dog who clearly loved and trusted him.

“Anyone who would do this would not be safe for you or your daughter,” another user on the site went so far as to say.

“The fact that he could do this to a small, old dog shows that he completely lacks empathy. The fact that he is jealous of the attention given to a dog really makes him seem like a narcissist. And he felt none of your grief and lied to you repeatedly. Please seriously consider the escape part. The call is coming from inside the house,” they wrote.
