Hyatt Place in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, reopening after fire

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – Hyatt Place on South Gay Street is reopening after a fire in early June caused the downtown hotel to close for several weeks.

The Knoxville Fire Department sent several fire trucks to the hotel on June 6 to battle the fire in the seventh floor elevator and electrical control room. The fire was extinguished an hour after crews intervened.

A note on the hotel's website said cancellation fees for stays through June 23 were being waived and all deposits and prepayments for stays canceled during the closure would be refunded.

The hotel is expected to reopen June 24 with the Five Thirty Lounge, located atop Hyatt Place, according to a company public relations representative.

Hyatt Place opened in December 2017 and a few months later, Five Thirty Lounge opened. The building formerly housed the Farragut Hotel, which was named after Admiral David Glasgow Farragut and closed in 1977.

According to the University of Tennessee, the Farragut Hotel thrived until 1929, when the Andrew Johnson Hotel opened and the two hotels competed fiercely.
