Hyatt Place hotel in downtown Knoxville reopens on Gay Street after fire

The Hyatt Place on Gay Street reopened June 24 after damage from a small fire caused the downtown Knoxville hotel to close for more than two weeks.

The June 6 fire in a seventh-floor electrical cabinet caused no injuries, but guests were evacuated and transferred to other downtown hotels at Hyatt Place's expense, spokesman Mike said. Cohen. The hotel refunded guest deposits and waived cancellation fees during the closure.

“The actual damage from this fire was quite minimal, but the firefighters had to put it out. So the water and materials used on the seventh floor flowed through the building, which caused a lot of problems that we had to fix it,” Cohen told Knox News. “That’s why it took so long.”

The Starbucks on the ground floor and the popular Five Thirty Lounge on the rooftop have also reopened.

The Knoxville Fire Department responded to the fire by shutting off electrical power to the affected portion of the building where the sprinkler system was activated, Deputy Chief Mark Wilbanks said. The inspections division had to revisit the hotel to ensure everything was up to code and the hotel was ready to reopen.

An electrical spark in the closet ignited some stored items, Cohen said

Local crews have been working over the past two weeks to replace any electrical systems that may be affected later.
