Hurricane Beryl Live Updates: Storm Makes Landfall Near Mexico's Popular Resort of Tulum

Hurricane Beryl Heads Toward Yucatan Peninsula and Gulf of Mexico

Hurricane Beryl, currently a Category 2 storm, made landfall in the popular tourist resort of Tulum, Mexico, Friday morning with 110 mph winds and dangerous storm surge.

The region will face life-threatening winds, storm surges of up to six feet and rainfall of up to 10 inches, the National Hurricane Center forecast.

Hurricane Beryl will then bring dangerous rip currents to the Gulf Coast over the weekend before likely making landfall in South Texas on Monday.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador warned that Beryl could make a direct hit on Tulum, urging tourists and residents to seek higher ground, shelter or homes for family and friends elsewhere.

“Do not hesitate, material goods can be replaced,” the president wrote.

Hurricane Beryl has killed at least ten people, Reuters reports. Two of the victims, one in St George's, Grenada, and one in Hanover, Jamaica, died when strong winds toppled trees onto their homes.

Hurricane Beryl devastated Jamaica on Wednesday, leaving 400,000 people without power and destroying buildings, while Grenada was also left with “unimaginable” destruction after the storm passed through on Monday, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said, damaging or destroying 98 percent of buildings.

Beryl weakens slightly to a strong Category 2 hurricane as it moves closer to Mexico

Hurricane Beryl weakened slightly to a Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph as it approached Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

A hurricane must reach at least 111 mph to be considered a Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, making it a major hurricane.

Despite its category, the National Hurricane Center warned residents who will be affected to shelter in place as “life-threatening conditions” move across the Yucatan Peninsula today.

Hurricane-force winds, dangerous storm surge and heavy rain are expected, as well as rip currents that could cause life-threatening beach conditions beginning later today and into the weekend across much of the Gulf Coast.
