Hurkes sentenced to statutory maximum sentence of 30 years in federal prison | Local News

{KXLG – Watertown, SD} Ted “TJ” Jeffrey Hurkes of Watertown was sentenced to the statutory maximum sentence of 30 years in federal custody today following a plea deal accepted in Aberdeen Federal Court. Sentencing took place on June 3, 2024 at 4 p.m., after Hurkes remained in federal custody since his plea.

Court documents reveal that on November 12, 2022, Hurkes was involved in creating sexually explicit material involving a minor, knowing that these images would be distributed (Count 2). Additionally, between October 2, 2022 and January 13, 2023, Hurkes knowingly received and distributed child pornography (Count 3).

Four photographs were formally presented as evidence at the trial and sealed from the public. These images and other detailed information contributed to the court's decision to impose the maximum sentence on Hurkes for his crimes.

As Hurkes begins his sentence, the Watertown community prepares for his trial on a plethora of state charges, technically a total of 72. A status hearing is currently scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on August 21, 2024, and a jury trial. is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on August 29, 2024. These dates are subject to change and various factors determine how the case will proceed.
