Human remains linked to woman's death in 1978 homicide

Joan Shirley Joyce's remains have been identified nearly five decades after her murder.

The Collier County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday it has identified the victim of a decades-old homicide, hoping to find his accused killer.

The remains of Joan Shirley Joyce, born in 1936, were found in a shallow grave in 1978.

The sheriff's office said Tuesday that DNA testing positively identified Joyce.

On June 3, 1978, Joyce's body was discovered in a shallow grave on a dirt road near State Road 29, a half-mile south of Alligator Alley, the sheriff's office said. The Collier County Medical Examiner's Office determined Joyce died of blunt force head trauma.

A DNA sample extracted from Joyce was submitted to Othram Inc., a Texas-based laboratory specializing in forensic genetic genealogy, as part of a grant for genealogical testing.

The sheriff's office said tests recently positively identified the victim as Joyce. A relationship test report revealed Joyce had family in California, the sheriff's office said.

Further investigation by detectives revealed that Joyce had disappeared in the 1970s while living on the east coast of Florida, although authorities never found evidence of a missing person report linked to her disappearance.

The sheriff's office said Joyce had a young daughter at the time of her disappearance.

The sheriff's office said authorities are continuing to investigate Joyce's death, hoping to find her killer.

“Our efforts to identify all exhumed remains continue,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement posted on its Facebook page.

The sheriff's office said March 6 that it was the largest exhumation project ever conducted in Florida.
