Human remains found in April identified as Nantucket woman missing since 2015

Human remains discovered in Nantucket last month have been identified as Mary Macy, a Nantucket resident who disappeared from her home in 2015, according to a death certificate filed with the Nantucket Town Clerk's Office, Nantucket Current reports .

Macy was 60 years old when she disappeared in June 2015 and was thought to be suffering from early-onset Alzheimer's disease.

Macy's date of death was recorded as April 4, 2024, the same day the remains were found by a man in the Philips Run swamp area near Milestone Road, according to the death certificate filed with the office of the city clerk.

Nantucket Current Reports Nantucket Police Lt. Angus MacVicar confirmed the remains belonged to Mary Macy.

“The manner of death and all the circumstances surrounding it” are still under investigation, he told the Nantucket Current.

“This is not a closed case. We continue to investigate as best we can,” he said.

Macy's remains were found by men searching for antlers on April 4, according to an April news release from the Nantucket Police Department.

Nantucket Police Department Central Dispatch received a call about human remains found near the east end of the island shortly before 5:10 p.m., according to the release.

Two men who were in the area looking for antlers shed by deer discovered the remains, the department said in a news release.

Patrol officers, detectives and Massachusetts State Police responded and found the remains in the dense forest near Milestone Road, according to the release.

The scene was secured and processed, and evidence was collected, the release states. The remains were then removed and transferred to the state's chief medical examiner's office, the department said.
