Hovercraft missing in waters of Lake Washington in Melbourne

FWC and other agencies search for missing 52-year-old hovercraft in Melbourne's Lake Washington area

MELBOURNE — A search and rescue operation continued through the night into today as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission and several other agencies combed the waters of Melbourne's Lake Washington Park in search of a man allegedly thrown overboard from an airboat.

The search continued through the night as FWC officers, along with deputies from the Brevard and Orange County Sheriff's Offices, used lights, drones and sonar to find the unidentified man from 52-year-old from Brevard County, authorities reported.

“We are still actively looking for him. At this time, we do not know the circumstances of what happened or how he went overboard,” Chad Weber, spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, said Sunday.

The incident happened around 4 p.m. Saturday as the man and at least one other person were going on a private excursion on Lake Washington, an area popular with boaters and fishermen. After the man went overboard, the other person on the airboat called authorities for help, Weber said.

The lake, which is part of a 25-acre recreation area, like other Florida waters, is home to alligators. National Weather Service officials say thunderstorm cells could develop later this afternoon with isolated showers in the area of western Brevard County where the park is located.
